Applying with impact: Comprehensive workshop on grasping the job application process.
On Tuesday, September 26th, the Employability team hosted their second workshop for final-year students and alumni, focusing on the job application process.
This practical 2-hour workshop, led by our accomplished Career Consultants, Yas Kojouri and Maria Barden, was designed to equip students and alumni with strategies for securing a graduate role and gaining valuable insights into the application process. It covered topics such as understanding the application process, tailoring CVs for specific roles, and developing the interview skills necessary for securing a graduate position after completing their studies.
The workshop covered three main topics:
1- Why and How to Tailor Your CV for Each Application: The Career Consultants explained the importance of customizing CVs to stand out to recruiters, showcasing interest in the role and demonstrating suitability through skills and experience. A tailored CV specific to the job and employer can significantly increase the chances of being shortlisted for an interview and progressing through the recruitment process.
2- How to Complete an Application Form and Write Personal Statements: Yas and Maria provided a comprehensive explanation of application form structures and offered guidance on crafting compelling personal statements or cover letters. Candidates were advised on how to make a compelling case for their suitability for the position, using examples that align with the criteria outlined in the job's person specification.
3- How to Approach an Interview by Anticipating Interview Questions and Planning Answers: The Career Consultants discussed different types of interview questions and techniques for preparing comprehensive answers with relevant scenarios and examples.
With over 50 participants in attendance, the workshop generated engaging discussions, with many questions on each covered subject, which involved also our Employer Engagement team of Careers Consultants, Anum Qadeer and Joe Colman. Participants provided positive feedback, appreciating the examples and clear explanations offered. They valued not only the step-by-step guidance through the application and interview processes but also the insights into the significance of preparation and understanding the processes involved in graduate job hunting.
Another successful and well-received workshop to enhance the experiences of both students and alumni. We look forward to our next workshop very soon!
