This International Women's Day, we had the pleasure of speaking with Paula Alucai, founder of Bright Training & Assessment and a dedicated Health and Safety Advisor for construction companies. She shared her inspiring journey of launching her business, her challenges, and her passion for creating safer and more efficient worksites through accessible, high-quality training.

Tell us about yourself.

I am Paula Alucai, the founder of Bright Training and Assessment and a dedicated Health and Safety Advisor for construction companies. With extensive experience in the construction industry, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of proper training, compliance, and workplace safety. My passion for creating safer, more efficient worksites led me to establish Bright Training and Assessment—a business focused on equipping individuals with the skills and qualifications necessary to thrive in this demanding industry.

The concept behind Bright Training and Assessment stems from my commitment to workforce development and safety. The construction industry is constantly evolving, with strict regulations and safety standards that workers must adhere to. Through our training programs, we help individuals gain nationally recognised qualifications, ensuring they meet industry requirements while enhancing their career opportunities.

As a Health and Safety Advisor, I understand the challenges that construction companies face in maintaining compliance and reducing workplace risks. Our courses are designed not only to provide essential skills but also to promote a strong safety culture within the industry. By offering accessible, high-quality training, we empower workers to build successful careers while contributing to safer and more efficient worksites.

At Bright Training and Assessment, our mission is to bridge the gap between industry needs and professional growth, ensuring that both individuals and businesses benefit from a well-trained, competent workforce.

What inspired you to set up Bright Training and Assessment

As a Health and Safety Advisor in the construction industry, I saw a gap where many skilled workers struggled to obtain the necessary qualifications for career growth and compliance. I wanted to create a solution that made training more accessible, practical, and relevant to real-world construction needs. My passion for safety and workforce development drove me to establish Bright Training and Assessment, ensuring that workers receive high-quality training that enhances both their careers and site safety.

What challenges have you faced so far in building Bright Training and Assessment

Building Bright Training and Assessment has been a rewarding but challenging journey. One of the biggest hurdles has been establishing credibility in a competitive industry. Since training and assessment require strict compliance with industry regulations, ensuring that our courses meet all legal and quality standards was a key priority.

Another challenge has been reaching the right audience—many construction workers are experienced but may not prioritize formal training until it becomes a requirement. Educating them on the long-term benefits of obtaining qualifications has required strategic marketing and engagement.

Additionally, balancing my role as a Health and Safety Advisor while growing the business has been demanding, requiring strong time management and delegation. Despite these challenges, each obstacle has provided valuable lessons, helping me refine our training approach and expand our impact in the industry.

How can ARU London students benefit from using Bright Training and Assessment

ARU London students, especially those pursuing careers in construction, project management, or health and safety, can greatly benefit from Bright Training and Assessment. Our business provides industry-recognised qualifications that enhance employability, ensuring students meet the necessary standards for construction roles.

Additionally, those interested in health and safety roles can gain insights from our expertise, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application.

By obtaining the right qualifications early, students can boost their career prospects, meet industry requirements, and gain a competitive edge in the job market.

What advice would you give to students and/or other young women who are trying to become an entrepreneur or start their own businesses?

Believe in yourself and take the first step—every successful business starts with an idea and action. Stay curious, keep learning, and seek mentorship to navigate challenges. Build a strong network, embrace setbacks as learning experiences, and stay persistent. For women, especially in male-dominated industries, confidence and resilience are key. Your skills and perspective are valuable—own them and keep pushing forward.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship within their careers?

To encourage more women in entrepreneurship, we need to offer strong mentorship, access to resources, and create a supportive network. Highlighting successful female entrepreneurs and ensuring equal opportunities can inspire women to take the leap. Empowering them to believe in their ideas and take risks is key to fostering more women-led businesses.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Believe in your potential and don't let anyone limit your ambitions. Your skills, ideas, and perspective are valuable—don’t be afraid to pursue what excites you. Whether you’re aiming for leadership, entrepreneurship, or any other path, trust that you have what it takes to succeed. Stay resilient, embrace challenges, and remember that your career is yours to shape.

Are there any female leaders you find inspirational?

Yes, there are many inspiring female leaders across various industries! Some of the ones who stand out to me include:

Oprah Winfrey – Her journey from overcoming adversity to becoming a media mogul and philanthropist shows the power of resilience, self-belief, and the impact of using your platform for good.

Marie Curie – A pioneer in science and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, Marie Curie's groundbreaking work in radioactivity has inspired generations of women in STEM.

Melinda Gates – Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, she’s dedicated her work to advancing women's health and education globally, influencing both philanthropy and social change.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

The best piece of advice I've been given is: "Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s part of success."

This advice has helped me embrace setbacks as learning opportunities rather than obstacles. It’s a reminder that every challenge and mistake is a stepping stone to growth, and perseverance is often what makes the difference between giving up and achieving success.
