The Law Teacher of the Year award is the sole national recognition for excellence in law teaching. It honors exceptional educators who demonstrate passion, bring a unique touch to their teaching, and inspire colleagues and students.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Mohamed Raffa, Senior Lecturer in Law, for his nomination for Law Teacher of the Year 2025.
Students’ reason for Dr. Raffa’s nomination:
“Dr. Raffa's passion for education shines through in his creative teaching approach, which seamlessly blends theoretical foundations with real application of the law. His enthusiasm is contagious, creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment where students feel valued and empowered.”
A statement from Dr. Muke Ferguson, Head of Postgraduate:
"I have observed Dr Mohamed Raffa’s teaching a number of times and I can attest to his enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring a great student experience. While some law lecturers adopt didactic teaching because of the complexity and volume of teaching content that needs to be covered, Dr Raffa employs a conversational, enquiry-based approach."
A statement from Dr. Mohamed Raffa about his approach to teaching:
"My approach to teaching is rooted in the belief that the summit of success for tutors is to inspire learners to learn. In Law studies, Legal Education should not only equip students with the knowledge of laws and legal principles but also empower them to critically engage with the law, challenge its boundaries and use it as a tool for societal improvement.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy at Anglia Ruskin University London are three core principles: fostering active engagement, cultivating inclusivity and bridging theory with practice.
Active Engagement: Being a practising lawyer and Law Professor, I believe that students learn best when they are active participants in their education. In my classes, I use a blend of Socratic questioning, case-based discussions and experiential learning to create a dynamic and interactive environment. By challenging students to analyse complex legal scenarios, question assumptions and construct persuasive arguments, I aim to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. For example, I often simulate courtroom settings or legislative debates to immerse students in real-world legal processes.
Inclusivity: Law reflects society, and its study must embrace diverse perspectives. I strive to create a classroom atmosphere where every student feels valued and heard. This involves designing materials and discussions that highlight underrepresented voices and global legal systems. I encourage students to draw from their own experiences and cultural contexts, fostering a richer and more nuanced understanding of the law.
Bridging Theory and Practice: I am passionate about connecting legal theory to its practical application. Whether it’s through guest lectures from practitioners, internships facilitated through my network or research projects addressing pressing legal issues, I aim to show students the relevance of their learning. I also emphasise the importance of ethical responsibility, encouraging students to consider not just what the law is but what it should be.
Ultimately, my goal is to inspire my students to become thoughtful, innovative and compassionate legal professionals. I want them to leave my classroom not just with a mastery of the law but with the confidence and vision to shape it for the better. It is an incredible privilege to contribute to their journeys and their success is my greatest reward."
Congratulations again to Dr. Mohamed Raffa for this well-deserved recognition!
